10 Questions I have for Trump voters

I’ve got serious questions for Trump voters. I’m a 41-year old Irish woman. I’m ‘middle class’, college educated, a liberal and a feminist. I also believe in science and that the rate at which our climate is changing, far from being a natural phenomenon, is a human-induced one, caused mainly by our reliance on fossil fuels and the destruction of the natural world.  I believe in values such as democracy, equality, respect, kindness, compassion and dignity for all. I have struggled to comprehend over the last four years how any Trump supporter, particularly one who considers themselves to be a decent human being and who is educated and intelligent, can consistently ignore the misogyny, cruelty, racism and blatant disregard for human rights at the heart of Trump’s policies during his term as President of the USA. I would genuinely like to try to understand what would make someone reject such fundamentally basic human values and vote for someone who, to my mind, epitomises our basest impulses, the darkest parts of our psyches. Please, if you voted for Trump in 2016 and/or in 2020, I’d love to hear your answers to these questions:

  1. What does ‘leadership’ meant to you and do you think Donald Trump has demonstrated this quality as President of the US and during this election campaign?
  2. What makes you ‘American’ and are you proud to be an American today?
  3. How far did you get in your education? High school, college, university etc.
  4. Have you any idea how Trump is/was regarded internationally, in particular within Europe and if so, does it bother you? Why/why not?
  5. Do you read, and if so, what do you read and how often?
  6. Do you believe that climate change is a man-made phenomenon and a threat to life on earth? Why/why not?
  7. Have you ever travelled outside of the US and if so, where?
  8. What exactly is wrong with having a basic living wage and having a health care system that doesn’t discriminate, but is in fact, available to all, regardless of their circumstances?
  9. What personal values do you live by?
  10. Do you think all humans were created equal and in God’s image and if not, why not?
